Last week, something quite extraordinari happened inside one of our vehicles. A new life entered the world before anyone expected, and it happened during a Carrot Cars journey.
Our driver, Mo, was taking a couple to the Royal London Hospital. It was meant to be a routine journey, the final preparation before the baby’s arrival. But nature had its own timing. About twenty minutes before reaching the hospital, the baby decided he had waited long enough and was ready to arrive. Very quickly, the parents realised they were not going to make it to the hospital in time. Sitting in the back of the car, the first time, mother and father began preparing themselves for what was about to happen.
Mo immediately understood the seriousness of the situation. Together with the father, it was decided that the safest option was to stop the car and focus on the unexpected delivery.
Mo stepped outside the vehicle to give the couple privacy. At the same time, he called the ambulance service and provided the exact location coordinates. To shield the scene from curious passersby, he covered the rear window with his jacket from the outside so the parents could focus fully on the moment. The baby was delivered by the father in the back seat of the car. Around eighteen minutes later, the ambulance crew arrived and assisted the family. The paramedics then transported the newborn baby, Sven, and his parents to the Royal London Hospital. Permission to share the baby’s name was kindly given by the parents.
The story did not end there. The very next day, we received another booking. This time it was to bring baby Sven home from the hospital. Over the years, Carrot Cars has been the first ride home for hundreds of newborn babies across London. We have dedicated newborn baby seats and often transport families from hospitals to their homes after birth. Many parents specifically book a taxi with a newborn car seat so their baby can travel safely from the hospital to home. For many families, this is the first important journey together. But for baby Sven, this was already his second journey with Carrot Cars.
We were delighted to hear that both mother and baby were doing well. The ambulance crew even praised the father’s calm delivery skills, despite the fact that he had never trained for such a moment in his life. They also commended the quick thinking of driver Mo, whose calm actions helped keep the situation under control.
When we later asked Mo about the experience, he described it as feeling almost unreal. “It was like watching a slow-motion movie,” he said. “At first, there was panic. I remember looking into the eyes of the father and he looked terrified. I told him, focus on her, I will call an ambulance. After I spoke to the ambulance service, I noticed people stopping because they could hear the screams from the car. I realised I had to get those people away. I covered the back window with my jacket and asked everyone to move on. At the time the adrenaline was at maximum. Now it feels funny, but in that moment it was very intense.”
When we asked Mo whether he would still be happy to drive pregnant passengers to hospital in the future, his answer was immediate. He said he would like to be the first driver chosen for those journeys.
Carrot Cars has always welcomed mothers travelling to hospitals during the late stages of pregnancy. Because our service is based on pre-booked journeys rather than on-demand taxis, we always recommend booking the trip as early as possible. This allows us to prioritise the journey and ensure the right driver and vehicle are available. Many parents also ask whether they can book a taxi with a newborn seat when travelling home after the birth. At Carrot Cars we provide proper newborn car seats that are suitable for the first journey home from the hospital. This means families can safely travel with their newborn baby in a dedicated infant seat rather than worrying about finding a taxi with a baby seat at the last minute.
For first-time parents, the question often comes up what is the best way to travel from hospital with a newborn. A pre booked taxi with a newborn car seat is often the safest and calmest option. It allows the parents to focus on their baby while the driver takes care of the journey. In London many families choose to arrange a taxi with a newborn seat in advance so the ride home from hospital is comfortable and stress free.
And as this story shows, sometimes life simply cannot wait.
Life loves life.
